Update - No.5 - 23.03.11

Originally sent via email to friends and family only in Mar 2011

Hi Guys,

Another update and I promise there is no mention of ironmongery this time!

Corky checks clearances
Storage level and lower scenic level

Now then, if you've been paying attention, and you should because there will be a test at the end, you'll know that in the past I did a mock up of how the levels and baseboards might look using some boxes and offcuts of insulation board.  Well I thought I'd do the same thing again, but using the newly erected baseboard frames this time as a final check that I'm happy with the system and the heights and clearances.  All looks good so I will now push on and start working my way around the room.  Look at the photos and you'll see buildings, rolling stock and thanks to a rather attractive male model...how the heights and ergonomics work out.  The first level to receive track will be the lowest level storage and return loops which have the pair of tractors sitting on them in the shots....that's class 37s for those unfortunate enough not to be acquainted with their charms!

2ft & 3ft scenic levels
2ft depth mock up
All 4 levels with representative trains and buildings

I'm really happy that the lowest scenic board (level 2) which has 3ft depth will be able to accommodate large structures without impinging on the deck above.  I want to have a fairly extensive diesel depot on the layout to accommodate my burgeoning collection of diesel hydraulics.  This will be based on the modernised WR depots that were constructed from similar concrete designs in the late 50's and early 60's.....think Plymouth Laira, Swansea Landore, Bristol Bath Rd etc.  The shot taken on level 3 of the Westerns and the shed building show that this will work really well if dropped a level onto the 3ft boards.  Anyway, that's a long way off right now.

Nothing more to say right now.......looks like you've gotten off lightly!

Cheers, Corky!
